H&P has commercially deployed its FlexRobotics system in the Permian, marking a milestone in US onshore drilling automation
9 Feb 2026

Helmerich & Payne has commercially deployed its FlexRobotics system on a land rig in the Permian Basin, moving rig-floor automation from development into live operational use. The step marks a significant shift in US onshore drilling, where physical robotics has lagged behind the adoption of digital monitoring and remote support tools.
The FlexRobotics package automates rig-floor tasks that have historically required manual labour. H&P says the system combines robotic arms, automation software and safety controls to reduce personnel exposure in high-risk zones and improve consistency during drilling and tripping operations.
The company has described it as its first full-scale robotic system for the rig floor.
Rather than supplementing existing digital tools, the deployment integrates robotics into direct operational handling, pushing automation into functions that have until now remained in human hands. That distinction matters as operators weigh whether automation can deliver measurable gains in safety and efficiency on multi-pad drilling programmes, which demand high repeatability across successive wells.
H&P has indicated that early customer interest is already building, suggesting the commercial case for rig-floor robotics is gaining traction among Permian operators. Whether that interest translates into broader adoption will depend on how well the system performs under sustained operational conditions, and whether the economics support deployment across a wider rig fleet.
